Choosing The Right Size Wall Art

Choosing the right size artwork for your wall can feel overwhelming, but we’ve made it easier than ever with our "View In Room" augmented reality tool. This innovative feature allows you to visualise exactly how our wall art will look in your space, taking the guesswork out of the equation. Once you’ve tried it, use this guide to fine-tune your decision and find the perfect fit for your walls.

1. Measure Your Wall Space

Start by measuring the available space on your wall. You want a piece that complements the area without feeling too overwhelming or too small. A good rule of thumb is for the artwork to take up 60-75% of the available wall space.

For example, if your wall is 3 metres wide, consider artwork between 1.8 to 2.25 metres wide. This proportion creates balance and harmony in your space, whether you opt for a single statement piece or a set of smaller works.

2. Consider the Room’s Purpose

The function of the room can influence the ideal size of your artwork. Larger spaces like living rooms often benefit from bold, statement pieces, while smaller, more personal spaces like bedrooms might suit a subtle or intimate approach.

  • Living Room: Opt for a single large artwork or a combination of pieces to create a focal point. Pieces above the sofa are especially impactful.
  • Dining Room: Choose long, horizontal pieces that echo the shape of the wall or dining table.
  • Bedroom: Smaller, serene artworks create a calming atmosphere.

3. Follow the Two-Thirds Rule Above Furniture

When hanging artwork above furniture, such as a sofa, bed, or console table, aim for the artwork to be two-thirds the width of the furniture below it. This ensures the piece feels proportionate and doesn’t overpower or get lost.

For example, if your sofa is 2.4 metres wide, your artwork should be roughly 1.6 metres wide. This guideline helps maintain balance in the overall design of the room.

4. Think Vertically in Tight Spaces

For narrow or tall spaces, such as corridors or areas beside doorways, vertical artwork is a great choice. Pieces with a tall aspect ratio or a series of vertical panels can make the space feel taller and more open.

5. Experiment with Layout Using Our "View In Room"

Before committing to hanging your artwork, use our "View In Room" augmented reality feature to see how the piece will look in your space. This tool allows you to visualise the size, scale, and placement of your chosen artwork with precision.

For an added step, try using painter’s tape to outline the dimensions of the piece on your wall. This helps you compare options and make adjustments before making your final decision.
