The Journey
Where it all began
The Beginning
A serious surfing accident abruptly ended my ability to surf and forced me to slow down in ways I never expected. What followed was recovery, frustration, and the challenge of redefining who I was without the ocean as I knew it. During this time, I began learning the craft of photography, not as a hobby, but as a way to stay connected to the ocean and start rebuilding what came next.
2009
After a long twelve months of rehab, in 2008 I finally decided it's time to spend my hard-earned money on a water housing. Photographing from the water is all I could dream about. This newfound obsession takes over, and I find myself bringing the camera into the water more than surfing. I can't get enough of that feeling of capturing a cracking shot.
Persistence Pays Off
Winning Digital Camera World Photographer of the Year changed everything.
My image Exit Wave was selected from over 150,000 international entries, a moment that validated years of persistence and confirmed photography was no longer a side path, but the direction forward.
Websites & E-Commerce
I began working commercially, selling prints, and putting my work into the public arena. Early on, I experimented with several websites, but none truly reflected what I wanted to create or how I wanted the work to live.
In 2013, moving to Shopify changed that direction. It allowed me to present my photography with clarity and intent, laying the foundation for a sustainable, print-focused business.
Love of Flying
During this time, my love for flying in chartered, doors-off helicopters took hold. Photographing fine art images from the air was not only creatively rewarding, but an experience in itself. This became the foundation of my aerial photography.
Momentum & Growth
With recognition came responsibility. I focused on large-scale fine art prints, aerial photography, and more ambitious work designed for walls, not screens. During this time, I stepped away from a full-time corporate role, recognising that my skills could deliver clear, effective visual communication for project managers and commercial teams.
Pop-Up Shop
January 2020 began with a pop-up shop in a full-time marketplace. Within weeks, lockdowns hit. That disruption became a catalyst, pushing me to build an online experience where buying art was as seamless as stepping into a store.
View in Room Launches
In 2024, View in Room launched, an augmented reality tool that allows customers to preview artworks on their own walls, without leaving home. It made visualising size, scale, and colour effortless.
At the same time, the work continued to evolve. Today, I’m focused on creating considered fine art photography shaped by the ocean, tested by setbacks, and strengthened through persistence. The journey isn’t finished, it’s simply matured.
Behind The Scenes
In the office
I'm lucky to call the ocean my office on days where the weather and other photoshoots allow.
Under the curl
One thing photography has given me is a network of amazing people with just as much passion as me. Always looking out for each other.
Every detail counts
Wade trying to focus whilst I get some BTS of a 120x80cm print. This was for a special project we had going on.
Acrylic process
One step of the acrylic process being performed. It takes the team lots of time to perfect this.
Epic size prints
Standing with one of our largest float frame canvases made for a luxury fitout on the Gold Coast.
Working it
I'm much better behind the camera instead of in front of it. However, you got to do what you got to do.
Personal delivery
This print was personally delivered to the client. They had such a nice doorway I asked for a quick photo.
Bay Of Fires
Some would argue this is my best angle. Magical sunset in Tasmania at the Bay Of Fires.
