Story Bridge photos, and where I shoot them from
Almost all of my Story Bridge photos are taken from the Kangaroo Point side of the Brisbane River, in the window that runs from about twenty minutes before sunset to about forty minutes after it. That window is the real answer to what most people are after when they search for Story Bridge photos. The bridge lights are on, the sky still has colour in it, and the river is usually calm enough to hold a full reflection. Shoot much earlier and the steel goes flat grey. Shoot much later and you get bright lights on a black sky, which looks dramatic on a phone and prints as a lot of empty dark.
The Story Bridge opened in 1940 and is still the largest steel cantilever bridge ever built in Australia. It is also the one shape that reads instantly as Brisbane, which is why it turns up in so many of my city prints. Below are four of them, shown hanging in real rooms rather than floating on a blank wall.
Why this stretch of river keeps working
Kangaroo Point is the vantage I keep coming back to, because it gives you the bridge, the CBD towers and the water in one frame without having to choose between them. The cliffs put you slightly above the river, so the reflection stays in the picture instead of being cut off by the bank.
The bridge also changes constantly, which is unusual for a landmark. The lighting is programmed, so on any given night it can be gold, blue or running full rainbow. I shot it on its 80th birthday at sunset, when the sky happened to go off at the same time, and that frame is still the one I sell most of. Late September it disappears behind Riverfire, which is the one night a year the whole city points at the same spot.

Story Bridge Brisbane 80th Birthday
The bridge on the evening of its 80th birthday, with the sunset doing most of the work. It is the warmest image in this group, all gold and orange through the steel, so it sits well against timber and against warm white walls rather than cool grey ones.
Shown here in a black frame over a sideboard, which is where this one tends to end up: an entry, a hallway console or the wall behind a dining sideboard. Landscape, so it wants horizontal furniture under it.
Brisbane City Life
The skyline at dusk under a purple sky, boats moored along the river, the city lights running down into the water. Cooler and quieter than the 80th birthday frame, and it is the one I would pick for a living room where you do not want the art shouting.

Reflections Of Sunrise
Taken from the Kangaroo Point side looking across at the towers, with the whole skyline doubled in the water. Pink and purple through the sky, which makes it one of the softer city images I have.
Shown above a dining table. That is a good use for a reflection image, because people sitting down are looking straight at the middle of the frame rather than up at it.
Twilight Of Brisbane
The skyline at dusk, reflected in the river and framed by silhouetted branches in the foreground. The branches are the reason this one is portrait rather than landscape, they close the frame in at the top and sides.
Shown as a canvas in a hallway beside a staircase. Portrait images earn their keep in narrow spots like this, where a landscape print would be fighting the wall. There is a black and white version of the same scene if you want it quieter again.
Size, frame and hanging height
Size. City images carry detail, so they reward going bigger than you first think. On a standard 2.7m wall, aim for the artwork to fill roughly 60 to 75 percent of the usable wall width. Over furniture, the rule I use is two thirds of the width of the piece below it: a 1.8m sideboard wants something around 1.2m wide.
Frame. A black frame suits the night images, it reads as part of the picture rather than a border around it. Oak warms the whole thing up and works better in a lighter coastal room. Canvas is the easiest option for a hallway or anywhere the print has to survive being brushed past, because there is no glass to catch a reflection. Hanging height. Centre of the artwork at 145cm to 150cm from the floor for an empty wall. Over furniture, ignore the floor and work from the furniture instead: 15cm to 25cm of gap between the top of the sideboard and the bottom of the frame. Orientation. The bridge is a horizontal subject, so most of these are landscape. Use portrait for stairwells, narrow hallways and the gap beside a door. Panoramas suit a long wall above a sofa or a bedhead, where a standard landscape frame would look lost.
